Petal blood drive to support National Blood Donor Month
PINE BELT, Mississippi (WDAM) – January is National Blood Donor Month. But, blood banks like Vitalant have experienced a historic drop in blood supply for the past two years.
With the rise of the Omicron variant, healthcare systems are struggling to find healthy donors available.
“Right now, the national shortage is a reality. This Vitalant has seen a decline in blood donation for the past two years and ultimately it affects the way our patients are cared for here at the local hospitals, ”said Sara Dyess, Vitalant Recruitment Donor Representative.
In the hopes of encouraging people to donate, Vitalant is offering something special to those who donate.
“Donors who donate in January are actually entered into a draw for a $ 5,000 gift card. So think about what all you can do with $ 5,000. And we urge everyone to become, as they reflect on New Year’s resolutions, to become blood donors this year, ”Dyess said.
Dyess also says that getting the vaccine shouldn’t stop anyone from donating blood.
“You can get the shot, you can even get the shot the same day and come donate with us as long as you don’t have any side effects. All we ask is that you feel healthy and come and see us, ”said Dyess.
To deal with this shortage of blood supply, the organization Petal Jaycees is stepping up and organizing a blood drive to support the local community.
Keeley Morgan, Vice President of Community Development for Petal Jaycee 2022, explains the importance of this blood drive.
“It’s important for the community because we never have what we will need for the blood. And we just want to make sure we’re there to show our support for our local blood banks, ”Morgan said.
The blood drive will take place this Sunday at Petal Walmart from noon to 4 p.m.
For those who wish to participate in the donation, you can make an appointment on donors.vitalant.org.
