Blood Donor Center urges donors to consider directed donation

FAYETTEVILLE – With available blood donation levels at a critical level, the Cape Fear Valley Blood Donor Center is urging patients who have scheduled surgery or an upcoming transfusion to talk to their friends and families about directed donation.

“We want to let people know, if they or their family members know that they will need surgery soon or that surgery is planned at any hospital in the Cape Fear Health System Valley, please come donate now and make a directed donation, ”said Blood Amy Fisher, Director of the Donor Center. “Some of these patients include high-risk deliveries, heart patients, and oncology patients. “

Directed donations allow blood to be donated on behalf of a specific patient to ensure that they have access to blood when they need it. To perform a directed donation, patients need a prescription or signed information from their doctor requesting blood donation.

“Even if a patient’s donors are not of a compatible blood type, they can donate and their blood will be credited to that patient,” Fisher said.

Compared to ideal blood supply levels, the Blood Donor Center is currently running out of around 75% of available blood units.

“Critical supply levels mean we have less than two days of blood available,” Fisher said. “A few patients in need would totally wipe out our supply of O positive and O negative with what we have on hand right now.”

Blood donors must be at least 17 years old, or 16 years old with signed parental consent; weigh at least 110 pounds; to be in a good health ; and have an identity document. Blood can be donated every eight weeks. Further information on eligibility restrictions is available at

The Blood Donor Center is located at 3357 Village Dr., in the Bordeaux Commercial Center. It is open for donations Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the third Saturday of each month, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
